The depths of.............Bedford!

Well i've now finished my first 5 week attachment at Cambridge. I was on a transplant firm for 4 weeks of that, and a breast surgery firm for 1 week. I had a really good time. Apparantly 7am ward rounds are very popular with surgeons (but I wouldn't know as I was in bed for most of them!). The life of a medic sounds a lot more cushy and more to my tastes! 10am ward rounds followed by tea and coffee in the doctors lounge!

So having finished my first block of surgery, this week has been a 'review and integration' week. This is a week of lectures after each attachment block designed to make sure everyone has kept up with the course, and also is a chance to ram some pathology down our un-suspecting throats. However, since it is a week of lectures many of the more sociable students in the year see these weeks as opportunities to be drunk for 7 days without having to go into the hospital (lectures are generally very skip-able if you catch up afterwards). I don't condone such behaviour.

Anyway, I now move onto my second attachment block, which is general medicine at Bedford hospital. This means up-rooting my life from cambridge and living out in bedford for the next 5 weeks. Some people with cars commute but in general when you're placed away from cambridge you stay out where you are. This is true of most medical schools that send their students away to other hospitals. Bedford should be fun, we get sent out there in a small tutorial group that we've been with all year, and we get on really well - well enough at least to go exploring the Bedford inner town centre in search of a good night out!

I asked a guy in the year above what going to Bedford was like and he told me this:

Downside: apparant high risk of being stabbed if you're discovered to be a student
Upside: lots of italian restaurants!

Yay!
