Life is EASY!
Yes, life is easy my friends. Having struggled through my one lecture of the week on monday morning I am now left with a whole week to do with as I please! Intercalated degrees are definitely the way forward for us lazy people!
It's a few weeks into term now, and everything it settling down to normality. In 3rd year I dont have as many modules as I have had for the past 2 years. The whole point of 3rd year is that you focus in much more detail on a few aspects of science or medicine that interest you. So my main research this year is going to be based around glucose metabolism in the retina. As well as doing that I also have 2 modules called 'Taught Courses' (imaginative names eh?). My first of these is on something called ATP Binding Casettes, they are basically transport proteins that let stuff in and out of cells. Not really that inspiring. My second course however is AWESOME! It's about the medical and molecular effects of Chemical, Biological and Nuclear weapons on the body! Unsuprisingly all the blokes went for that course!
Last week was our infamous week 2 Celebrities themed cocktail party. 3 or 4 of these ever so classy events take place each year and they are run by the medical society (Medsoc), of which I am president! Basically we hire out a bar or a club, pack it full of 1000 medical students and then fill up huge bins from B&Q with copious amounts of alcohol. Every medic pays £3 to get in and then they can drink as much as they like! And for the guys and girls who dont like alcohol there is tonnes of non alcoholic alternative. So it really is an amazing night! The costume people come up with are immense, this year they included the rock band Kiss, playboy bunnies, Willy Wonka (and a lot of umpalumpas! and Superman, to name just a few!
Having only one lecture a week did get a bit boring im afraid to say, so i've signed up to go on an acute care course today, where I will be taught how to look after critically ill patients and give them basic and advanced life support! Being a 3rd year is great!
