Clinical medicine!

So i'm now in my 6th week of general medicine! It's lots of fun, so much more fun than lectures but I'm feeling like it's just about time to move onto general surgery now (which is good as i'm moving to colorectal surgery next week!).

For the past 4 weeks i've been on an endocrine medicine ward. That means everyone has diabetes. fancinating? Well, diabetes is a serious disease but to me, it seems like one of those things you just seems to learn about EVERY damn year, (a bit like enzymes at school!). Thankfully endocine medicine also includes some other conditions such as ones that involve the thyroid gland and adrenal glands. It's an interesting speciality, you have to have a big brain i think to be good at it, lots of diagnoses are made just on the history and the blood tests and stuff come second.

After endocrine i moved to a respiratory and cardiology ward where I am enjoyed being coughed upon daily. It's amazing how hard it is to wash green phlegm out of your brand new marks and spencers easy iron shirt. Cardiology (hearts) is very cool, and quite complicated. Respiratory medicine is ok, but everyone seems to either have COPD or asthma or a chest infection. The silly people should just stop smoking then they wouldn't get so ill. Sadly trying to convince someone from Mansfield to stop smoking is like trying to convince your teacher 'you really are too ill to do cross country this week'.

Can't wait till i start surgery next week! Bring it on!!!
