Maxillofacial surgery
Trauma is fun! A bit gory.....but fun! I think i've seen more blood and gore in the last 3 weeks than in my entire time at medical school so far! During one operation the surgeon literally peeled all the skin off the patients neck and lower face so he could fix his jaw and take out a tumour! Pretty amazing stuff! Seen quite a few broken jaws and cheekbones from fights in town. The best time to catch some trauma with the max-fax team is either at 6pm when lots of grannys seem to fall over and crack their jaws whilst making dinner, or at about 11pm on a friday or saturday night when the pubs begin to empty boozing fat sweaty unattractive thugs onto the streets! Trying to sew up a drunk mans face is very difficult! Generally, if the patient is lary, drunk and rude the a&e staff will let a medical student have a shot at sewing up their cuts for practice (sober, pleasant and nice patients get a real doctor or nurse).
